What is FreeBSD?
FreeBSD is an advanced operating system derived from BSD, the version of UNIX® developed at the University of California, Berkeley. FreeBSD is also known as Free Unix and Berkeley Unix. Although it's a true Unix, it can't be called Unix because the Unix trademark is owned by Open Group. FreeBSD's robust network services under the heaviest loads makes it a great choice for servers. One of its most popular features are the FreeBSD ports, a unique system that resolves dependencies, retrieves the source code, compiles it and installs the resulting package. There are more than 10,000 ports to choose from! That makes the FreeBSD ports one of the biggest open source software repositories. The FreeBSD operating system (kernel + userland) is developed by the same development team. This means that upgrading the whole OS is painless, faster boot up times, apps tend to run much faster, ... In fact, FreeBSD is one of the fastest OSes on the PC. It is very popular as a server OS but it is usable as a workstation OS as well.
You can get FreeBSD from many places such as the FreeBSD Mall (official CDs), Amazon (book+CD) and FTP sites (ISO images). Get a FreeBSD book and a t-shirt!
